Thanksgiving Eats (New Orleans, LA)

On a whim, DBP and I decided to conquer the Big Easy for Thanksgiving.  After his time in the Mississippi Delta and my fabulous tour of Atlanta, he was ready for more southern comforts and hospitality, so we made it happen.

We had a blast and ended up extending our stay — TWICE, and here’s why…

Gastronomy

I may be small, but I can put away some food!  Reluctantly, I buried my fear of seafood and went all in! Besides, what better place is there to be a glutton, than the World City of Gastronomy? If you haven’t already, check out these New Orleans restaurants the next time you’re in the Big Easy!

New Orleans Restaurants: Royal House Oyster Bar

Oyster Trio – Royal House Oyster Bar, New Orleans

A Court of Two Sisters: I’m not usually one for buffets, but I sampled and relished everything from duck a l’Orange to turtle soup and everything in between.  Join them for their daily jazz brunch with live band. Get there early, because they close early if it’s slow (learned this the hard way).  It took us three attempts, but we finally caught them open and it was well worth the wait!

Clancy’s: This garden district gem is swankier than the spots we frequented, but there was no shortage on fabulous food.  Have the sommelier recommend a great bottle of wine and have SOMETHING with crab in it. Dress it up a bit and make a reservation.  After work business dinners had the place packed 20 minutes after opening at 5pm.

Felix’s Restaurant and Oyster Bar: We skipped the oysters here and went straight for the eggplant napolean (highly recommended), po’ boys and jambalaya.  Don’t be fooled by the crowd across the street, Felix’s is good eating!

Royal House Oyster Bar: I tried oysters for the first time and FELL IN LOVE.  The charbroiled oysters are by far my faves and the oyster royale, topped with a seafood medley of shrimp craiwfish and crabmeat stuffing, is not too far behind.  We stopped in almost everyday afterwards for our oyster fix!

Howlin’ Wolf Den: To satiate late night hunger pains, check out this bar and grill right next door to the Howlin’ Wolf  music venue.  Their gator and chicken jambalaya is a great late night snack to hold you over ’til morning.

Bacchanal Wine Bar: This Bywater location is a wine bar, music venue, deli, and international bistro all rolled into one.  Stop by for awesome deli sandwiches and free wine tastings (on Saturdays). Keep an eye out for camera crews  filming the HBO series, Treme.

Cafe du Monde: One word: BEIGNETS!  I’m addicted and love these little sugar covered pieces of heaven paired with hot chocolate (I don’t do coffee) and always an order (or two) to go.  Open 24 hours, we found the best time to enjoy the 800 Decatur St. location was in the late evenings (sans the crazy tourist crowd).

That picture looks so yummy! I love all the great kinds of food that you can get while in New Orleans. That’s one of my favorite things about the city. Can’t wait to try some of these new locations!

    • Definitely! Your post has me planning a return weekend in NOLA as soon as I get back in the US!!!

  • Yum! We loved the beignets at Cafe du Monde. 🙂

We’re also not big fans of seafood, though, so it limited some of our options in NOLA. Jambalaya turned out to be our favorite dish. I’m salivating just thinking about it, lol.

Yeah seafood is in everything it seems! I really like A Court of Two Sisters because there were a lot of non seafood things to sample. If all else fails a diet of beignets and hurricanes can’t hurt for a few days, right?
